When a waveform is distorted in such a way that the extreme ends are cut off, the wave has been clipped. When a piece of audio equipment is fed an audio signal too high for it to handle, it clips the voltage to what it can handle resulting in (usually) audible distortion. A clipped signal can damage equipment downstream from it, especially speakers. |
