The level of sound that is barely audible in the absence of significant
ambient noise is the absolute hearing threshold. It is the lowest sound level
that is detected during a specific percentage of experimental trials. A
statistical definition is necessary because, even for a single animal, the
minimum detectable sound level varies over time (Richardson et al., 1995). |
