inverse-square law

Download Acoustical Society of America Standards

  1. The name given to a law of physics which states "for each doubling of distance a sound wave travels along a path, the level of sound will drop to 1/4th (the inverse of the square of the distance)". Doubling the distance reduces the sound pressure level (SPL) by 6dB.

  2. Under far field/free field conditions, sound intensity varies inversely with the square of the distance from the source. In pure spherical divergence of sound from a point source in free space, the sound pressure level decreases 6 dB for each doubling of the distance.
