A pollutant may be considered as any substance, usually an
unwanted by-product or waste, that is released into the environment as a result
of (human) activities that alter the chemical, physical and biological
characteristics of the environment. These substances may be found in any of the
solid, liquid or gas phases. Their long-term effects are difficult to predict
and depend upon future human or cultural judgments.
