An agency in the US Department of Health and Human Services that was replaced
in 1992 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
In reorganizing ADAMHA into SAMHSA, the three ADAMHA research institutes, the
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the National
Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH),
were moved to the National Institutes of Health. What remain in SAMHSA are the
substance abuse and mental health services programs.
