- A group of biogenic amines derived from tyrosine and containing the catechol
(3, y-di-hydroxyphenyl) moiety. Certain of these amines, such as epinephrine,
norepinephrine, and dopamine, are neurotransmitters and exert an important
influence on peripheral and central nervous system activity.
- Monoamine compounds, each having a catechol portion. Catecholamines known
to be neurotransmitters of the central nervous system are norepinephrine and
dopamine; another, epinephrine, is principally a hormone.
