- Hardening of the arteries of the brain sometimes resulting in an organic
mental disorder that may be either primarily neurologic (e.g., convulsions,
aphasia, chorea, athetosis, parkinsonism, etc.) or primarily psychological
(e.g., intellectual dulling, memory deficits, emotional lability (see affect),
paranoid delusions, and confusion), or a combination of both. In DSM-IV, it is
termed vascular dementia.
- A chronic disease impairing intellectual and emotional life, caused by a
reduction in the brain's blood supply through a buildup of fatty deposits in
the arteries.
