A theory that attempts to explain the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and other psychotic states as due to excesses in dopamine activity in various areas of the brain. This theory is, in part, based on biological observations that the anti-psychotic properties of specific drugs may be related to their ability to block the action of dopamine, and the opposite effects of stimulants that increase the action of dopamine.
