- Inflammation of brain tissue caused by a number of agents, the most important
being several viruses carried by insects.
- Either acute or chronic inflammation of the brain caused by viruses,
bacteria, spirochetes, fungi, or protozoa. Neurologic signs and symptoms
and various mental and behavioral changes occur during the illness and may
persist. See also encephalopathy; organic mental disorder.
