One of the paraphilias, characterized by marked distress over, or acting on, sexual urges involving cross-dressing, most frequently in a heterosexual male. The condition may occur with gender dysphoria as part of a gender identity disorder, but more commonly the transvestite has no desire to change his sex but wants only at a particular time to appear to be a female.
