- A key psychonanalytic procedure in which the analysand is encouraged to give
free rein to his or her thoughts and feelings, verbalizing whatever comes into
the mind without monitoring its content. The assumption is that, over time,
hitherto repressed material will come forth for examination by the analysand and
analyst.
- In psychoanalytic therapy (see psychoanalysis), spontaneous, uncensored
verbalization by the patient of whatever comes to mind.
