A federal department established in 1953 as the U.S. Department of Health,
Education, and Welfare to supervise and coordinate the following agencies: Food
and Drug Administration; Office of Human Development; Public Health Service;
Social Security Administration; Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration; National Institutes of Health; Centers for Disease Control;
Health Care Financing Administration; Office of Children, Youth and Families;
and Office of Smoking and Health. In 1979, a separate Department of
Education was established, and the remaining agencies became the Department of
Health and Human Services.
