A sustained pattern of overt homosexual arousal that is a source of distress. When DSM-III was revised in 1987, ego-dystonic homosexuality was deleted as a diagnostic entity because "almost all people who are homosexual first go through a phase in which their homosexuality is ego dystonic" (Appendix, DSM-III-R).
