Charles Bonnet (1720-1793) A Swiss naturalist and philosopher who discovered parthenogenesis (development of an egg
without a male sperm) in insects (plant aphids) and inferred incorrectly,
proposing the preformation theory, that the females
carried many miniature young for succeeding generations in their bodies. He
first used the term evolution, but not quite as we do today, and conceived that
organisms could be arranged in a ladderlike, linear series.
