| The land grant colleges were created by the Morrill Act of 1862. This Act
proposed the sale of public land to finance the establishment of at least one
college in each state to teach agriculture and mechanic arts in addition to
other scientific and classical studies. This combination of liberal arts and
practical application created the land grant college ideal.
