The Bureau of Standards was established by Congress in 1901 to support industry, commerce, scientific institutions and all branches of the government to advance the science of measurements and develop standards. This was necessary because industries such as steel manufacturing, railroads, telephone and power companies did not have adequate standards of measurement. In 1988, the Bureau of Standards underwent a name change and is now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology. |
