A Marxian term that refers to the propertyless folks that sell their labor to those who own the means of production. It is the "mass" base upon which the "class" hierarchy builds. It is a distinct social stratum lacking in social "esteem" and social "honor." However, it is not lacking in political influence, real or potential, as the members possess the ability to create social unrest through mass action either formalized or spontaneous. |
