Blown-out shot

A shot that dissipates the explosive force by blowing out the stemming instead of breaking down the coal. It may be caused by insufficient stemming, overcharging with explosive, or a burden that is too much for the charge to dislodge. See also: gun; blow. Syn: cannon shot; gunned shot. Nelson
