Bắc Di Cư in the Diaspora: Mapping a Vietnamese Catholic Refugee Identity
This social history examines the transformation of collective identity of Northern Catholics who migrated to the South in 1954 and escaped Vietnam after 1975. In this paper, I make the argument that due to the overwhelming number of Northern Catholic migrants and their tight-knit communities, key features such as the devotion to the Vietnamese martyrs and Our Lady of La Vang had come to define the Northern Catholic migrant experience and identity in 1954. After 1975, as many of these Northern Catholic migrants would rebuild their communities overseas, these close relationships between Northern Catholic migrant communities and institutions allowed for these features to become mainstays of a Vietnamese Catholic refugee identity as victims of communism.
