- An orthorhombic mineral, 4[BaSO4 ] ; has nearly pseudocubic cleavage; occurs as interpenetrant masses of crystals with sand and clay (desert roses); sp gr, 4.5; in veins or in residual masses on limestone; the principal source of barium. Syn: barytes; dreelite; heavy spar; cawk.
