Health psychology is a subfield of psychology that focuses on how biological, psychological, and social factors interact to influence health and illness. It examines the ways in which individuals understand and manage their health, including their beliefs and attitudes about health, their coping strategies for managing illness, and the impact of stress and other life events on health.
Health psychologists also study the ways in which social and environmental factors, such as poverty, discrimination, and access to health care, influence health outcomes. The field also explores the role of behavior in health, including lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise, as well as health behaviors such as smoking, substance abuse, and compliance with medical treatments.
Health psychologists may work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and academic institutions, and they often collaborate with other health care professionals, such as doctors and nurses, to develop and implement interventions to improve health. Some of the areas of research and application in health psychology include chronic illness management, stress and coping, health behavior change, and patient-provider communication.
