The process granting certain individuals or groups that are threatening or disruptive to the dominant group in power concessions or apparent concessions in the hope that such individuals and/or groups will feel that they have made progress (while in actuality they have not) and not engage in activities and postures that are threatening and disruptive to those in power.

One of the main techniques utilized in co-optation is absorption that is, absorption into supposed positions of power, leadership, importance, and decision and policy making of a few representatives from groups and disaffected individuals that are threatening or disruptive to the established social order, i.e., radicals, revolutionaries, minority group members, etc.
