- A penalty or reward directed at a person or group in order to discourage or encourage certain types of behavior. Negative sanctions would include a firing squad or a disapproving frown. Positive sanctions would include a raise in salary or a big hug and kiss.
- Actions taken by the federal government for failure to provide or implement a State Implementation Plan (SIP). Such action may include withholding of highway funds and a ban on construction of new sources of potential pollution.
