Karl Ernst von Baer (1792-1876)

A German embryologist who developed the science of comparative embryology. He studied eggs and tissue formation. which led to the formulation of the Germ-layer theory (1828). He observed the resemblance between embryos of lower and higher animals and discovered mammalian eggs (1827).
